| Up to 1972 Alchemilla subcrenata Buser was regarded as doubtfully indigenous in the Netherlands. In this year, however, the occurrence of the species was recorded with certainty from the northern part of this country, viz. from a meadow along the brooklet Rolderdiep belonging to the area of glacial river beds Drentsche A. The most striking morphological characteristics of A. subcrenata are described, a number of details are given with regard to the habitat of the new locality and the distribution of this northern species is briefly discussed. |

| The sterile hybrid Carex otrubae Podp. X Carex paniculata L., new for the Netherlands, was discovered in five localities along the IJsselmeer in the province of Friesland (fig. 1). Together with the parents it grows there abundantly on sandy and wet forelands, in an unstable vegetation rich in species of the Agropyro-Rumicion crispi and the Filipendulion. Compared with the parents, the hybrid has intermediate characters as is shown in the figures 2 and 3. |

| The sterile hybrid Carex pseudocyperus L. X C. rostrata Stokes, new for the Netherlands, was discovered along a ditch near Gorredijk-Kortezwaag in the province of Friesland, in a large population of C. pseudocyperus. C. rostrata was found in the neighbourhood. The hybrid differs from C. pseudocyperus in, among other things, the glaucous leaves and the only slightly pendulous spikes. Compared with C. rostrata the hybrid has much flatter and wider leaves and the utricules gradually taper into the beak (fig. 2, a). The distinctly awned female glumes show the influence of C. pseudocyperus fig- 2,b). |

| Observations are presented for stable carbon isotope abundance (δ<sup>13</sup>C) and organic carbon and nitrogen content of suspended organic matter from the Southern Ocean (Circumpolar Current and Polar Front) during spring and early summer. The Polar Front Zone was characterized by elevated plankton biomasses and phytoplankton activity, which also increased significantly over the one-month investigation period. From the beginning of the phytoplankton bloom δ<sup>13</sup>C values of suspended organic matter in the Polar Front were high, exceeding values predicted from the relationship with CO<sub>2(aq)</sub> concentration observed in other areas of the Southern Ocean. | Tot voor kort werd in do Nederlandse flora’s naast S. aquaticus Huds. tevens S. erraticus Bertol. vermeld. De eerste soort wordt bij ons vrij algemeen aangetroffen op moerassige terreinen en in vochtige graslanden, terwijl de tweede zeer zeldzaam zou zijn op moerassige plaatsen en aan waterkanten. Na 1951 is S. erraticus uit de Nederlandse flora’s verdwenen, omdat men thans meent dat de soort niet hij ons voorkomt. In de flora’s van Heukels – bewerkt door Dr. S. J. van Ooststroom – die na 1951 zijn verschenen, wordt in de plaats van S. erraticus de var. pennatifidus Gren. et Godr. van S. aquaticus onderscheiden. | Goodyera repens (L.) R.Br. op Ameland. Naar aanleiding van de mededeling van dr. S.J. van Ooststroom, Dennenorchis op de Waddeneilanden (D.L.N. p.12) het volgende. Toen ik in 1952 van M.T. Jansen hoorde van zijn vondst van Goodyera op Ameland, herinnerde ik mij een paar exemplaren van deze soort, die ik vond in het herbarium van het Friesch Natuurhistorisch Museum te Leeuwarden. Deze planten waren op Ameland verzameld als Epipactis palustris. Ik vermeldde toen op het etiket do juiste naam met de opmerking: deugt do vindplaats wel? Dit laatste in verband mot het feit, dat mij gebleken was, dat de etiketten van dit herbarium voor een groot deel volkomen onbetrouwbaar zijn. On deze reden besteedde ik dan ook geen nadere aandacht aan deze planten. |

| In verband met de vrij grote veelvormigheid werden van het riet verscheidene paramorfen beschreven. Bij sommige zijn de kenmerken niet erfelijk bepaald, maar een gevolg van de inwerking van het uitwendige milieu, terwijl andere op erfelijke eigenschappen berusten. Over het algemeen is echter de aard van deze veelvormigheid nog onvoldoende bekend. De aandacht wordt hier evenwel op dit probleem gevestigd, omdat schrijver een begin heeft gemaakt met een onderzoek naar de polymorfie van Phragmites in Nederland. Het opstellen van een systematische onderverdeling van het riet is echter niet in de eerste plaats het doel van dit onderzoek. | Het laatste decennium zijn van de boreale Carex aquatilis een aantal vindplaatsen in Groningen en in het noorden van Drente bekend geworden; plaatselijk groeit de soort hier vegetatievormend. Voor Europa wordt de soort verder vermeld uit: Ierland, W.- en N.-Engeland, Schotland, Ijsland, Skandinavië (doch naar het zuiden zeldzamer wordend), Finland, Rusland (naar het zuiden tot bij Leningrad) en Estland, bij Reval (zie Kern en Reichgelt, Fl. Neerl. I, 3, 1954, p.79). Daar volgens de literatuur Carex aquatilis niet bekend is uit Denemarken en Duitsland veronderstelt Mej. Dr. Ch.H. | Besides the Amathusiidae in the general collection the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden possesses a considerable number of representatives of the group, in excellently preserved specimens, in the collection of the late Mr. J. H. Jurriaanse. Moreover I could study the Amathusiidae in the collection of the Zoological Laboratory at Groningen, at present in the custody of the Leiden Museum. | De ssp. flavensis was tot voor kort alleen bekend van de IJselmeerkust ter hoogte van het Kampereiland en van Schokkerhaven in de Noordoostpolder. In de zomer van 1956 ontdekte ik de plant tevens op een eilandje in het Kadoelermeer hij Vollenhove en aan de rand van een matig voedselrijk veen tussen Rotsterhaule en Rotstergaast in Friesland. Bovendien trof ik een ex. aan in het “Herbarium Frisicum” van D.T.E. v.d. Ploeg (nr. 49—179), op 16 Aug. 1949 in oen oevervegetatie bij Akkerwoude in Friesland deze plant was door Kloos als Scirpus tabernaemontani Gmel. gedetermineerd. S. lacustris ssp. flevensis lijkt in habitus vrij sterk op ssp. glaucus (Sm.) Hartm. (S. tabarnaernontani Gmel. der flora’s), doch in kenmerken is zij intermediair tussen ssp. lacustris... |

| The Southern Ocean (44-75 degrees S) plays a critical role in the global carbon cycle, yet remains one of the most poorly sampled ocean regions. Different approaches have been used to estimate sea-air CO2 fluxes in this region: synthesis of surface ocean observations, ocean biogeochemical models, and atmospheric and ocean inversions. As part of the RECCAP (REgional Carbon Cycle Assessment and Processes) project, we combine these different approaches to quantify and assess the magnitude and variability in Southern Ocean sea-air CO2 fluxes between 1990-2009. Using all models and inversions (26), the integrated median annual sea-air CO2 flux of -0.42+/-0.07 Pg C yr(-1) for the 44-75 degrees S region, is consistent with the -0.27+/-0.13 Pg C yr(-1) calculated... |
